Clos Saint Jean has always produced very good traditional Chateauneuf du Pape yet with masses of fabulous old vines situated at lieu-dit ‘La Crau’ - also a potential for greatness.
Around 8 years ago, propieter Vincant Maurel enlisted the help of top Rhone oenologist; Philippe Cambie & things really started to happen for Clos Saint Jean and starting with the spectacular 2003 wines, the domaine has been on a wonderful run of vintages and its wines are always amongst the most sought after in all of Chateauneuf du Pape
Grapes are all de-stemmed prior to fermentation, with a maceration lasting around 35 days. For that wonderful old Grenache there is no barrel- ageing (instead using tank or large fourdes) but the other varieties see about a year either new or year old barrels. There is no fining nor filtration for any of the cuvee’s.
